3 art galleries in Cape Town you can add to your list right now

The Mother City has a thriving art scene and if you’re visiting this bustling metropolis, there are plenty of wonderful places to see some local art 

Cape Town is home to a myriad of artists and galleries, featuring art from around the world, with a focus on African art and creativity. As one of the world’s most renowned travel destinations, this city has much to offer when it comes to cultural experiences, sights and sounds.

So if you’re planning a trip to Cape Town in the coming weeks, we’ve rounded up some exhibitions to check out your trip. 

THK Gallery

Founded in 2018 and located in the heart of Cape Town’s city, THK Gallery has opened a location in Cologne, Germany. Home to contemporary art and representing local artists like Lulama Wolf, Jake Michael Singer, and Mmangaliso Nzuza. Previous exhibitions include artists like Trevor Stuurman, Driaan Claassen and Dominique Cheminais. This month, the gallery is hosting Guy Simpson’s House of Fran, running until 30 April 2023. Goodman Gallery

Originally based in Johannesburg, the Goodman Gallery has expanded to Cape Town with a space in the upmarket suburb of Green Point. With a history spanning over six decades, the Goodman Gallery has been an integral part of showcasing emerging and established contemporary South African artists. If you’re visiting Cape Town in the coming weeks, check out the current exhibition Freedom is Going Home, as established American artists Faith Ringgold and Hank Willis Thomas engage in an intergenerational dialogue. The show speaks to their commitment to articulating Black stories and the desire for liberation across geographies.

A4 Arts Foundation

Another city centre fixture, the A4 Arts Foundation describes itself as a ‘free to public, not-for-profit, laboratory for the arts in Southern Africa’. The three-storey building is located in District Six, one of the most well-known historical areas in Cape Town. If you're visiting, the monthly First Thursday events are one way to see some of the artwork exhibited at this space.
