A stone fortress set atop the rugged ocean cliffs of the Robberg Coastal Corridor, near Plettenberg Bay, Fynbos Fort is a place both ancient and sacred. Completely secluded in a private nature reserve, it is an escape unlike any other—an essential, restorative space at the edge of the world.
The Lowdown
Emerging from the landscape like a monumental stone cairn, marking the boundary between the uncertain present and the harmonious future. Fynbos Fort stands solitary within 340 acres of protected natural beauty—home to increasingly rare species of fynbos within the Cape Floristic Kingdom—at the epic meeting of wild land and ocean.
Sleeping Arrangements
Fynbos Fort feels more like a quarried camp than a modern house, with an unusual floorplan that comprises just one bedroom, and, in lieu of additional rooms, there’s a generous communal living and sleeping area with extra-large daybeds, able to accommodate up to 12 guests.
What To Expect
Driven with the absolute vision to preserve its place upon this land before time and designed by the late architect Menno Meinesz, Fynbos Fort is completely off the grid and built from local, hand-quarried stone, its impactful simplicity perfectly at peace with its unique ecosystem. When night falls, a high-walled lapa offers a sheltered space for sharing meals beneath the starlight.
The Art House Difference
There is something deeply eternal about Fynbos Fort, as if it has always been there, existing beyond time and memory. With two kilometres of private coastline and views stretching over 30 kilometres, as well as surrounding Stone Age sites, some almost one million years old, it is impossible not to feel the gravity of history and the power of nature in this truly exceptional place.
